Her phone had been silent for the entire day. She'd received one text from Alice early in the morning, and that was it. Jenna sighed as she put her phone back in her desk drawer for the twentieth time that morning.
She kept replaying her dinner with Alice inside her head to figure out what she did wrong. She must have caused this. Alice was becoming more and more distant. At first, Jenna had blamed her new demanding job, but now Jenna felt like Alice was avoiding her.
âHey, Jenna!â Rachel walked into the lab and greeted her with a high-pitched voice. âI didn't expect you to be here still. Weren't you going to the café for lunch?â
âHey, Rachel.â Jenna smiled, but her soft, slow tone gave away her sadness. âI was supposed to go to lunch with Alice, but she canceled on me this morning. I don't feel like going alone.â
âThat sucks! Why did she cancel?â
Jenna went silent for a moment as the moment they kissed replayed in her head. She remembered how Alice pulled away from her. She thought nothing of it, but now she couldn't stop thinking about it.
âI don't know; I think she's just been busy with work lately.â
Rachel stared at Jenna as the frown spread across her face, and her eyes became sunken. Rachel couldn't stand seeing Jenna like this. She was usually so bubbly and confident. Now she looked as though someone has kicked her in the gut and left her on the ground.
âWhy don't you come to lunch with me?â Rachel suggested. âI was just about to head to the café. You keep saying that we need to hang out more, why don't we start now?â
Jenna looked up at Rachel, and a smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
âYeah, let's do it.â Jenna pushed herself away from her desk and stood up. âI don't see why I should skip lunch because Alice canceled on me.â
Jenna thought about Alice as she and Rachel made their way to the café. Alice had been so distant. Jenna felt like she'd been stabbed in the back every time Alice sent her a one-worded text or didn't return her call. Jenna felt like she'd become desperate and annoying, but Alice had avoided her. She couldn't be that busy at work. Alice had changed since that kiss, and Jenna didn't like the change in her.
She glanced at Rachel, who skipped next to her. She ran her hand along the wall and hummed a song to herself. Jenna had enjoyed the few weeks she'd been spending with Rachel in the lab. Whenever Alice made her feel sad, Rachel knew how to make her laugh.
She was always happy about something. Rachel knew how to enjoy life, and Jenna enjoyed life more when she was around. The more Jenna thought about it, she realized that she never thought about Alice that much when she was with Rachel.
âHey, what are you going to eat?â Rachel asked her. âPlease don't repeat a turkey sandwich, it is so boring! Eat something spicy for a change.
